How to Care for Your Custom Cutting Boards and Charcuterie Boards

Custom cutting boards and charcuterie boards are more than just functional kitchen tools—they're works of art that elevate your cooking experience and enhance your presentation. Whether you're slicing fresh ingredients or serving up an artisanal spread, these boards deserve a little TLC to keep them beautiful and long-lasting. At Kitchens by TBS, we craft boards that are made to last, and here’s how to care for them properly.

1. Clean Gently

  • While it is tempting to do, avoid tossing your board in the dishwasher—this can warp or crack even the sturdiest wood.  Try this instead;
    After each use, wash your board with warm water and mild dish soap using a soft sponge or cloth.
  • Rinse well and dry immediately with a towel. Try not to let it soak or sit in water.
  • For deeper cleaning or odors (like garlic or onion), gently scrub with coarse salt and lemon juice.

2. Moisturize Your Board

Wood needs moisture to stay healthy—but not from water! Every few weeks (or whenever the board looks dry):

  •  Apply food-grade mineral oil or a board cream (a blend of mineral oil and beeswax).
  • Rub the oil in using a clean cloth or paper towel, then let it soak overnight.
  • Wipe off any excess the next day.

3. Use Both Sides for Cutting Boards

We know it is nice to have one side stay beautiful for showcasing, but to avoid warping and uneven wear, alternate sides when using your cutting board. This helps maintain the board’s shape and extends its life.  This is especially true for cutting boards, but if you are using your display only charcuterie board for moist items like cheese, meat and fresh fruit, you will get more life out of your board if you use both sides.

4. Some Foods Stain

Just like spills on your favourite white shirt, foods with strong dyes like beets, turmeric, or berries can stain your board. While natural, these foods can leave behind colors that are hard to remove. If you do use these, wipe the board immediately after use to reduce staining, or try putting these foods in small bowls on your charcuterie board.

5. Storage

Most of our clients keep their beautiful boards on display.  If you are storing a board, try to choose clean, dry, well-ventilated spaces where your board can stand upright.
